Sports Massage

Looking for a Sports Massage Therapist? Body Heal Thyself has a new one! Her name is Hanna Kim, and she’s Ah-May-Zing!

Encyclopedia.com says “Sports massage is a form of bodywork geared toward participants in athletics. It is used to help prevent injuries, to prepare the body for athletic activity and maintain it in optimal condition, and to help athletes recover from workouts and injuries.”  This is exactly correct!

Sports massage, when used properly, will be used during the entire training process.  From the training, to the actual sports season, to directly after the game/run/competition, and when injuries occur.  The point is to keep the body moving well, prepared for action, recovering quickly and healing properly. Using massage only as a “fix it” when you’ve been injured participating in a sport is missing the point.

Athletes are beasts!

They train like their life depends on it! Most serious athletes train every single day and find it hard to take rest days.  Their minds are totally on the goal and struggle with slowing down.  This is precisely why massage is important all through the training process!

Firstly, their bodies need to recover and relax.  When athletes push so hard all the time, they never give their muscles a chance to relax, un-constrict, lengthen, unwind. Massage can continue to help with this as it provides fresh blood flow to fatigued, adhered muscles, and it helps to get those over-use knots out.

Secondly, there’s an important aspect of mental focus that’s necessary for athletes, whether great ones, or “just for fun” athletes. Sometimes, the thinking is all about the game or the goal and not really paying attention to how their body is holding up.

Getting a massage will help you to drop into your body to get in touch with it. It will show you where the tension, tightness, fatigue, overwork, and pain is.  You will notice things during bodywork that you don’t notice on a daily basis, which is a good “check in” to see how your body is truly doing.

You don’t have to be a triathlon competitor or a professional football player to get a sports massage. We all use our bodies every single day, most of us in repetitive work conditions, causing fatigue and over-use. That means everyone can benefit.
