We’ve been talking about the different benefits of massage the past few weeks and we continue this week with how massage can help insomnia. Of course, a regular massage will relieve stress and relax you to help you sleep, but in this message, I’m talking specifically about the Abdominal Detox Massage (aka Chi Nei Tsang) that I offer.

Chi Nei Tsang is a centuries old technique of abdominal massage that focuses on removing blocked energy (Chi) from the organs, allowing them work more effectively. Blockages can come from various traumas, hurts (emotional or physical), tensions, stresses, worries, et. al.,  that the body has not processed and digested properly. Most of these blockages are formed completely subconsciously, but can cause twisting and tangling of the nerves, blood vessels and lymph systems, restricting the flow of the Chi and causing a variety of problems including digestive issues, anxiety, depression and insomnia! Removing these blockages will allow the organs to process the pent up “stuff”and eliminate the blockages through the digestive system.

In Chinese medicine, the various organs are related to different moods and feelings. For instance, fear is related to the kidneys and anger is related to the liver. Each organ is also related to a time on the clock, so if you’re waking between 1-3 am you may be experiencing troubles with your liver (anger), or if you’re waking between 3-5am you may be experiencing trouble with your lungs (grief).
